New yachts sat on the same waterfront as vessels available immediately on the secondary market.&nbsp;For somebody considering ownership, the comparison exposes the real cost of insisting on new.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Buyers had 700 boats to compare<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The festival brought around 700 boats to Cannes, including almost 150 world premieres across the full show.&nbsp;YachtBuyer counted 117 superyachts, compared with around 120 in 2025 and 113 in 2024. Seventy were classified as new yachts and 59 had been delivered during 2026.&nbsp;The average age of the attending superyacht fleet fell to 4.65 years from 5.16 years last year and 6.63 years in 2024.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Builders therefore arrived with unusually fresh inventory.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Azimut, Sanlorenzo, Sunseeker, Benetti, Ferretti Group brands and smaller yards used Cannes to show buyers what current yacht design looks like before Monaco shifts attention towards larger vessels later this month.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The brokerage pontoons offered a different proposition: leave with something already built.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Immediate delivery has acquired a value of its own<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A custom or semi-custom yacht order ties the buyer to a build schedule measured in years.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The reward is control over specifications, interior decisions and, depending on the project, substantial parts of the naval architecture. The cost includes time and exposure to decisions that continue long after the purchase contract is signed.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A recent brokerage yacht removes much of that uncertainty.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The buyer sees the finished interior, actual storage, engine-room access, crew circulation and how the yacht sits in the water. Surveyors inspect a physical vessel rather than a specification.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Sea trials answer questions that renderings cannot.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Cannes made that comparison unusually direct because recently delivered brokerage yachts were sitting beside brand-new models.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>For buyers who do not need a yacht built around a highly personal brief, a two- or three-year-old vessel also preserves much of the technology and contemporary layout of a new boat.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>The used yacht needs a different form of due diligence<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Immediate availability does not make the decision simpler.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A brokerage yacht arrives with a history.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Surveyors inspect machinery hours, stabilisers, generators, navigation systems, tenders, paint, hull condition and maintenance records. Lawyers review title, registration, VAT status and any financing or encumbrances. The buyer also needs to understand which warranties remain and whether previous modifications were documented correctly.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Crew knowledge becomes useful during the sale.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>An engineer who has spent two seasons aboard knows which systems have required attention. Maintenance invoices reveal more than a sales brochure.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The cheaper yacht sometimes becomes expensive after deferred maintenance enters the first refit.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Comparing asking prices therefore only starts the calculation.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>New yachts are selling something different<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The strongest new launches at Cannes were not merely replacements for older models.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Builders used new hulls, larger glazing, redesigned aft sections, flexible cockpit layouts and alternative propulsion packages to change how owners use boats of familiar lengths.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Benetti presented the Oasis 36M with an 82-square-metre aft deck. Sunseeker revealed a new 45-metre model and its 86 Ocean Enclosed. Azimut brought the 21-metre Fly 70 with two cockpit configurations. Ferretti showed the INFYNITO 100 ahead of a planned 2027 launch.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Those changes give the new-build market its advantage.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A buyer purchasing an older yacht receives yesterday\u2019s answer to questions about space, energy use and owner privacy. Some answers age well. Others date the boat quickly.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Cannes lets buyers decide which innovations are worth paying and waiting for.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Monaco changes the comparison again<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The Monaco Yacht Show opens on 23 September with more than 120 superyachts expected in Port Hercule.&nbsp;The scale moves upwards. The 2026 fleet includes vessels above 70, 80 and 100 metres, including the 111-metre Oceanco Leviathan and 102.4-metre L\u00fcrssen Nixie.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A buyer moving from Cannes to Monaco therefore sees two different sections of the ownership market within ten days.&nbsp;Cannes provides breadth, production yachts, sailing boats, multihulls and a large number of vessels close enough to conventional private ownership to compare directly.&nbsp;Monaco concentrates the upper end of the market.<\/span><\/p><p><span>The more interesting number from Cannes was not the length of its largest yacht.
